Logan Martin won the BMX Freestyle.

Australia's Logan Martin won the men's BMX freestyle and was crowned world champion. The 27-year-old rider from the Gold Coast, Queensland, slid into the gold medal position early, scoring a 93.3 with a series of tricks that he pulled off in the first minute of his appearance in the finals.

"I won the seeded run, and my first run here was a safety run," he said. I wanted a clean, consistent run and it paid off."

Venezuelan veteran Daniel Darth, 36, was the only rider to score over 90 points in the first minute.

Martin, the top seed, was last. However, his 92.05 was not enough to challenge Martin. It was enough, however, to earn him the silver medal.

By the time Martin came in for his second run, the medal had already been decided, and for a moment it looked as if he would score even higher. But in the end, Martin spent most of his final one-minute run savoring his first ever gold medal victory in Olympic men's BMX freestyle,

"I did a front bike flip [on the second run], but I wanted to do it for the fans and the people watching at home."

.

"I have no words. This is crazy. It's been a really long journey to get here. I was totally focused on coming here and winning a gold medal. I was under a lot of pressure going into Japan because I won the World Championships last month and was one of the favorites to win.

The gold medal was not Martin's first victory in a landmark event; the Australian won his first World Cup in 2016 and his first world championship in 2017 at the UCI Urban Worlds in China.

"I've had a lot of great moments in my career, but I've never shed a tear. I can take home the greatest stage of my career, a gold medal, and show it to my son. I can't believe my son looks up to me. ...... It's wonderful."
