The UCI has announced that British rider Jocelyn Roden will attempt to break the hour record this fall. Roden, who rides for the UCI Continental team Drops-Le Col s/b Tempur on the road, unofficially broke Vittoria Bussi's current record of 48.007 km during a training simulation earlier this year. Roden recorded 48.160 km.
Roden raced the UK National Series with an amateur team in 2017 and moved to Story Racing, the UCI team named after Dame Sarah Strehley, in 2018. A relative newcomer, still in her late 20s, Loden quickly accumulated impressive national results before moving to Drops in mid-2019, where she has been ever since.
Roden's only road race of 2020 was the Setmana Ciclista Valenciana, where he finished 12th overall. In a similar effort to Hour, Roden won the British 25-mile championships later that season, running the 40.23 km course in a time of 52:14.
The UK-based rider has a pedigree in time trials and has also won the national 10-mile championships. At the 2019 World Championships in Yorkshire, he was part of the bronze medal-winning mixed relay team. This season, he finished fifth in the Brabantse Pijl and recently won the overall at the Tour de FĂ©minin, winning the final stage by more than five minutes.
Roden will travel to Switzerland next month for the Tissot Velodrome in Grenchen (Switzerland) on September 30.
"I am very happy to officially announce that I will be attempting to break the Tissot UCI Hour Record at the end of September this year. The support of Le Corps and the Watt Shop has made the challenge possible." Vittoria Bussi has set a high bar with her high altitude record, but with support and the right preparation, I believe we can push the record."
In order to challenge the UCI Hour Record, riders must be in the UCI registered test pool, give written notice, sign a contract, and agree to submit their bikes and other components to the technical department at least 15 days before the event, as set by the governing body. Stringent criteria must be met.
