Katie Marchant (GBR) was one of the favorites for gold in the women's keirin at the Tokyo Olympics, but fell in the quarterfinals. She was circling Dutchwoman Laurine Van Riessen on the bell lap of the quarterfinals when Van Riessen, avoiding wheel contact, entered Merchant's path, causing both riders to fall.
Merchant returned to her bike and finished the race, but Van Riessen reportedly lost consciousness momentarily after the crash. She was taken off the truck on a stretcher and taken to the hospital.
"She is fine, but does not remember falling," said a spokesman for the Dutch track team. 'She was able to clarify that the pain is primarily related to her shoulder. A team doctor is attending to her".
According to De Telegraaf, Van Riessen broke her collarbone and ribs and also suffered a lung contusion. She is hospitalized for observation.
Marchand expressed concern after the race; the 28-year-old will return for Friday's track session and is expected to improve on her 2016 Rio result in the individual sprint.
"I think it was just a bike race, wrong place, wrong time. I got beat up a little bit, but I think I'm okay," Merchant said after the race. I don't really know what happened. I was so focused on moving forward that I don't know if she hit someone on the side or if her wheel passed my wheel when I fell.
"I needed to finish the race in case the results showed a demotion or something. I don't really know what happened, but it was the wrong place and the wrong time and I got caught up in it."
Merchant, who began his sporting career as a heptathlete before switching to cycling in 2013, won a bronze medal in the individual sprint at the Rio Olympics. 'Today's not my day, is it? Merchant said of Thursday's Keirin.
"I bled a little bit, but I think I'm okay. I'll start the sprint competition tomorrow," she said.
