Ian Boswell moves up from one minute to second place at SBT GRVL

Ian Boswell came from nearly a minute behind to finish second in the SBT GRVL on Sunday. The American, who won Unbound Gravel this summer, finished behind Alex Howes and one ahead of Peter Stetina in the three-man sprint that defined the race in Colorado.

Boswell was briefly out of the lead group and chasing close to a minute, but an overall regrouping took place before the final selection took place. The lead group was whittled down to five riders, with Howes, Stetina, and Boswell in the lead with about 12 miles to go.

"It was a really positive experience and a really cool race.

Boswell told Cycling News before the awards ceremony in Steamboat, Colorado. [but] in a race like this, you never know when you're going to come back, so you just have to keep riding.

"It was a great course and a really great event. It was hard, and like most of these events, it was a war of attrition, and by the time we got to the climb at mile 90, there were probably 30 or 40 of us in the pack.

"It was a big group for such a fast course, but at some point in these events, everyone reaches their limit. With 8,000 feet of elevation, you're up pretty high.

Stetina and Howes were in the 144-mile SBT race after Saturday's very grueling Leadville 100, but the two joined Boswell and the three, who remain friends off the bike, rode the final section of the SBT course together.

Boswell congratulated the EF-Education Nippo riders, acknowledging that Howes was the fastest rider at the end of the grueling race.

"The three of us came together around 12 miles to go after we left the pavement. We had five or six miles before that. Pete pushed on downhill, Alex went, and from there it was pavement, so the three of us went into town together."

"Alex is the fastest on paper and in real life. He's a good guy and he and Pete ran Leadville yesterday. [Alex was aggressive all day. He got caught trying to move in the last 40 miles. We are friends on and off the bike, so when we got into town everyone was happy and it was a fair race. Alex was the fastest in the sprint so I am happy to see him win."
