Chrome has refreshed its urban shoe lineup in collaboration with Panaracer, which offers expertise in rubber compounds for producing grippy soles. The refresh brings back the Kursk AW Pro with SPD. This shoe has the potential to be the best commuter cycling shoe, and is also suitable for couriers and urban riders who want the casual aesthetics of a trainer and the efficiency of clipping.
Headlining the Chrome AW21 footwear is the Kursk AW 2.0 Pro. In Chrome's footwear, the name Pro refers to the SPD-equipped model with 2-bolt mountain bike cleats on the sole. While more and more brands are releasing SPD-equipped casual shoes, such as Adidas' Velosamba, Chrome was one of the first to incorporate SPD in its original Kursk Pro series.
The new version of the Krusk AW Pro features a rigid flex-plate nylon shank under a Panaracer no-slip outsole that extends the length of the foot for superior power transfer without compromising walking comfort.
The upper is made of abrasion-resistant 1050 denier PU-lined material, is hydrophobic, and uses a gusseted tongue to prevent the elements. Finally, there is reflective detailing on the rear to increase nighttime visibility when running around town.
If you prefer the style of a mid-rise trainer, Chrome also has the Southside 3.0 Pro, which uses the same sole construction and 1050 denier Cordura as the Krusk Pro.
The Pro models are priced at £110/$120 for the Krusk AW 2.0 Pro and £130/$135 for the Southside 3.0 Pro, both in the Night Reflective Black option only. Shoes are available in sizes US 5-12 (up to 13 for the Southside 3.0 Pro) and half sizes 7.5-11.5.
Chrome offers both the Krusk AW and Southside 3.0 shoes in a non-SPD regular sole, along with the Dima 3.0 slip-on and Southside Low offered. Interestingly, despite not having an SPD cleat interface, Chrome uses a stiff nylon shank in all of its flat pedal shoes, which provides better power transfer than a regular trainer sole.
The flat pedal shoes also come in a variety of colors, with the Kursk AW (£90/$100) and Dima 3.0 (£90/$95) available in Night, Woodland Camo, and Olive Leaf. The Southside 3.0 (£110 / $110) has Night and Olive Leaf, while the Southside Low (£90 / $100) version has only Black.
