Organizers of the Koppencross announced Monday that the women's race will be renamed the Grand Prix Jolien Verschuren in honor of the Belgian racer who died of cancer in July. Verschueren won the Koppencross in 2015 and 2016.
"If she needs to be remembered somewhere, it's here," organizer Erwin Verwecken said according to Wielerflits (opens in new tab). 'Let's make it a nice tribute.'
Verschueren learned in 2015 that he had a brain tumor during a routine post-crash exam and went on to race his most successful season with the condition without treatment. A few years later, however, the brain tumor had progressed and required surgery.
She continued to balance racing and her career as a school teacher until last year, when Koppencross was her last race.
The Koppencross in Oudenaard on November 1 is the opening race of the 2021-2022 X2O Badkamers Trophy Series, followed by Kortrijk on November 27, Lone Hout on December 31, Barre on January 1, and Helenthals on January 5 and 22 and Hamme, and the final rounds in Lille and Brussels in February.
