Remco Evenpole Makes Gravel Debut at Belgian Waffle Ride Kansas, Finishes in Top 10

Remco Evenpole (Deceuninck-Quickstep) finished in the top 10 in his gravel race debut at the Belgian Waffle Ride in Kansas on Sunday.

The 21-year-old took on the 111-km middle-distance route and completed it in 4 hours and 3 minutes, finishing seventh, just over an hour behind winner Scott Jackson.

Evenpoel's teammate Mattia Cattaneo also competed, finishing a few minutes behind in 9th place.

Organizers offered three distances in the fourth and final Belgian Waffle Ride of the season, which kicked off in Lawrence, Kansas.

American Tanner Ward finished first in the main men's race, 111 miles (178 km), 8,000 feet in elevation gain, across northeast Kansas.

Tiffany Cromwell (Canyon SRAM) of Australia won the women's race.

Evenpoel and Cattaneo competed in the middle-distance event called the "Wafer," a 69-mile (111 km), 3,600-ft elevation gain. The "wanas" were 33 miles (20 km) with 1,500 ft. of elevation gain.

Evenepoel, who has eight road wins this season, raced as part of a partnership between the Dissewnik-Quick Step team and Specialized, but was negative about his competitiveness going into the off-season.

Evenepoel raced on Specialized's new gravel racer, the S-Works Crux, a top-spec retail model equipped with SRAM's "Red eTap AXS" groupset and weighing just 7.25 kg. used at the Belgian Waffle Ride For more information on Evenepoel's S-Works Crux used in the Belgian Waffle Ride, click here.
