Kenny de Ketele and Rob Giss took the overall win in the Ghent Six over Roger Kluge and Yasper de Buist in the final Madison event. World champions in this event, Michal Morkov/Rasse Norman Hansen, finished third.
The three teams were in the sixth day of racing at the legendary 166m't Kuipke with the title on the line. De Baist and Kluge, who are competing on the road from Lotto Soudal, held the lead on the first day. Over the next four days, the Danish duo of Morkov and Hansen overtook them on GC to take a 15-point lead over 2019 defending champions De Ketele and Gis for round six. The pairing of Lotto Soudal was another 67 points ahead, with Iljo Caisse and Mark Cavendish in fourth place and the rest of the teams far behind.
Caisse and Cavendish won Madison on the first day, but on Sunday evening, Cavendish crashed in the final race along with Hansen.
At the time of the crash, the race was neutralized. Both riders were able to get up on their own, but only Hansen was able to return to his car and continue the race after a 40-minute delay. Cavendish was placed on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital, where he waved to the spectators as he left the track.
When the race resumed with 50 laps to go, the battle was down to two teams as Casey had to continue alone. Hansen was unable to reel them in late, leaving the Danish pair four laps down.
With 35 laps to go, de Ketele and Giese took the overall win, and their teammates from Sport Vlaanderen-Balloise won with a total of 376 points. Kluge and de Baist were second, 69 points behind, and the Danes were six laps behind with 368 points.
It was the perfect end to a cycling career for de Ketele, who at age 36 will retire this year. He has won the Ghent Six five times. For Ghis, it was his second title.
"I am speechless! Great conditions, great teammates, great event, great result," de Ketele said on his Instagram.
