Sporza reported today that starting March 1, the UCI will allow drone cameras to follow riders in sanctioned cyclocross races, provided that organizers obtain permission.
Flanders Classics used a drone to capture footage of European champion Lucinda Brand's victory in Gavere's Superprestige, providing a compelling perspective never before seen in cyclocross.
However, UCI officials quickly grounded the drone, cutting off the innovative angle.
UCI sport director Peter van den Abel said the drone was grounded because the organizers did not have the proper permits.
"Drones can be used for live recording with prior permission," Van den Avert told Sporza. 'However, it appears that no such written request was made at Gavere. The jury president simply applied the stipulation."
Good news was later brought to the committee and the race directors agreed to employ more drones in the future.
"There was a supervisory committee meeting last week. There was a discussion about professional on-air filming. And it was decided to take more advantage of that possibility, and we will do that now, because starting March 1, drones will be deployed in general," Van den Abel said.
"If it can paint a better picture of cycling, we are definitely not going to stop doing it."
