Not content with stealing vowels from smart trainers and cycle computers, fitness giant Wahoo has released its first power meter, the Powrlink Zero pedal, and a new take on the classic roller set. But that system, while recognized as the best turbo trainer on the market, remained resolutely tethered, and so never made it out into the wider world.Wahoo acquired Speedplay in 2019 to develop a power meter for indoor and outdoor riders until it has the perfect platform to develop a power meter for both indoor and outdoor riders.
The new Wahoo Powrlink Zero pedals are available in both dual-sided and single-sided versions and, like all the best power meters, are extremely accurate. Previously, if you wanted to use a pedal-based power system, you were limited to Look cleats, such as the Garmin Vector and more recently the Favero Assioma DUO power pedals.
The Powrlink Zero pedals weigh 250g on one side and 276g on both sides and have an MSRP of £549.99/$649.99 and £849.99/$999.99 respectively. The claimed 75-hour runtime should satisfy all but the most sleep-averse ultra racers.
Luckily, we were able to get our hands on these ahead of their release, and here are our first impressions of the Wahoo Powrlink Zero pedals.
For a long time, if you tried to ride indoors in the winter, you were faced with either the tedious operation of a turbo trainer or the dreaded balancing act of a roller set. Recently, turbo trainer technology has advanced by leaps and bounds, but no matter how much better they get, they never seem to be able to mimic the natural ride that a roller set provides.
And now it appears that Wahoo has integrated these two systems into the new Kickr Rollr. The Rollr has the commonly seen dual rear rollers, but combined with a front support that can accommodate tires up to 2.1"/53mm. This should open up the system to riders with a variety of bikes or who want to use it as a warm-up before various events. It should also solve the balance issues that are common with classic roller systems and embarrassing accidents during warm-ups.
Incorporating accurate power measurement into a roller-based system is not easy. Adding too much resistance to the rear roller can compromise the natural ride of the system or cause the tires to slip, which can skew the data significantly. For this reason, Wahoo recommends a secondary power meter like the Powrlink Zeros for data collection.
Nevertheless, it remains a fairly versatile system, and if it works well, it is also attractively priced; the MSRP for the Kickr Rollr is £699.99/$799.99, but if you need power measurements to get the most out of your system, Wahoo bundling the Rollr with a single-sided set of Powrlink Zero pedals for £1199.99/$1399.99.
