New UCI Gravel World Series Calendar Leaked; April Starts in the Philippines

The planned calendar for the 2022 UCI Gravel World Series has leaked, listing 14 qualifying events leading up to the season-opening UCI Gravel World Championships.

Described as "preliminary" by the Gran Fondo Daily News (opens in new tab), the UCI Gravel World Series, sponsored by Trek, appears to start on April 3, 2022 in the Philippines.

The Gravel Philippines Bongabon in Vega Grande is expected by the UCI to be the opening race of the off-road series, with two courses: an 85km course (qualifying distance for ages 19-49) and a 62km course (qualifying distance for ages 50+).

No major events from established gravel rides or races in the U.S. were named in the first year of the UCI World Series, including the Garmin Gravel Worlds in Nebraska.

This grassroots gravel challenge, which owns the trademarked name "Gravel Worlds," will host its 12th edition in Lincoln on August 20.

Three of the five events scheduled to take place in North America will be held between June 18 and July 8. Starting with the Blue Mountains Gravel Fondo in Ontario, Canada, the Highlands Gravel Classic in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and the new Gravel Ensenada in the Baja California region of Mexico.

After a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Kettle Mettle Gravel Fondo will hold a round in British Columbia, Canada in mid-September, and the Jingle GX Gravel Race will conclude its regular series in Iowa City, Iowa on September 24 The event is scheduled to be held in Iowa City, Iowa, on September 24.

The UCI announced last September that it would oversee the creation of a gravel series and a gravel world championship.

Golasso also hosts the Gran Fondo World Series and World Championships as part of the UCI Cycling for All initiative.

Several news outlets reported that the course and equipment regulations for the Gravel World Series will be the same as the already established Gravel Gran Fondo Series for amateur riders.

To qualify for the Gravel World Championships, participants must have a UCI racing license and, according to the Daily Guardian, "must be in the top 25% group by gender and age."

With three weekends where multiple events were held in different countries, early reports indicated that participants only needed to finish in the top 25% in one event to qualify for the championships.
