Jake Stewart, who made his World Tour debut last year, has yet to start the 2022 season after his Groupama-FDJ team announced Tuesday that the 22-year-old was delayed by an intestinal issue.
Stewart, who finished second in last year's Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, was expected to make a splash in the Classics but missed out on the Tour of Flanders after colliding with Nasser Bouhanni in the Choret pays de la Loire and breaking his left hand.
The Briton said he did not know when he would be able to race.
"I have been suffering from intestinal problems since mid-January and have been unable to race," Stewart said in a team press release. 'I am looking for the best solution to treat it. During this period I will not be able to race at a high level, I can train but not compete."
Team doctor Jackie Mayo said Stewart has an inflamed gut and "must follow treatment that will keep him from racing."
Stewart thanked the team for "giving me time to understand what is going on. Everything is in place for me to recover and get back to my best level."
[12Stewart followed up on Twitter, saying, "Sorry to those who put me on their fantasy team for the Spring Classic. My health is an asset and I'm taking the time to find myself 100% again!"
