Tom Pidcock could make his Tour de France debut in July, and Ineos Grenadiers is considering shuffling its Grand Tour roster after Egan Bernal's terrible training crash.
Ineos Grenadiers team manager Rod Ellingworth admitted to Cycling News that the British team will follow Richard Kalapas' original plan to target the mountainous Giro d'Italia. [Adam Yates will keep Ineos Grenadier's GC hopes alive at the Tour de France, while Filippo Ganna will target the opening time trial and first yellow jersey in Copenhagen.
Pidcock was scheduled to ride with Calapaz and 2020 winner Tao Geoghegan Hart at the Giro d'Italia. Despite missing Strade Bianche due to a stomach issue, he faces an intense spring classics campaign that will start after the cyclocross world title and continue through Liege-Bastogne-Liege in late April.
For Pidcock, it makes sense to rest and prepare for the Tour de France after a long block of races that includes cyclocross and classics.
"Of course, not having Egan changes the way you approach a race like the Tour," Ellingworth admitted to Cyclingnews. [Richard Carapas for the Giro d'Italia and Adam Yates for the Tour de France. The Vuelta a EspaƱa is a little more open, but we'll see what happens."
"For the Tour, we'll go with Filippo Ganna for the opening time trial. Adam came to Ineos Grenadiers looking to improve on his fourth place overall in 2016. He is ambitious and wants it. The Giro suits Richard, so he wants to focus on the Giro."
Geraint Thomas' role in the Grand Tour has yet to be confirmed, while Ineos Grenadiers is doing everything in his power to help Bernal fully recover.
"Egan's accident was a big blow for him and for the team. He was focused on establishing himself in the team and improving further. He had his career path in sight," Ellingworth said.
"We just hope he recovers well and gets back to his best. He seems to be doing everything he can to rehabilitate himself and that will be essential. He has the full support of his team and now he has to take it one day at a time.
Cyclingnews reported on Monday that Pidcock, praised for his success in various disciplines, has been with Ineos Grenadiers despite the many interests and offers from top bike brands who want to tempt him away from Ineos Grenadiers and onto Pinarello bikes He made it clear that he would stay put.
The 22-year-old Yorkshire rider missed the Strade Bianche due to stomach problems, but has targeted the classics early in his pro career.
"I can't say anything official about his contract, but we are traveling with Tom," Ellingworth told Cycling News.
"He has shown the world that he can compete in road racing, cyclocross, and mountain biking. So we invested a lot in him last year. I always say that a rider has dreams and ambitions and the team has to chase those dreams and ambitions and make it work for everyone.
"I have no doubt about Tom's future success. He ran the Vuelta last year after winning Olympic gold and rode through it quite well.
"I don't know if he will race the Giro this year or the Tour. He has a big program in the spring, so we'll see how that goes. It may be too early to fully understand if he can develop into a great Grand Tour rider, but we need to keep the door open and explore all options."[29
