Matteo Trentin will not race Paris-Nice stage 5 due to concussion.

Matteo Trentin, of UAE Team Emirates, suffered a blow to the head when he crashed on stage 2, but completed the stage and remained in the race for two more days.

However, on Thursday morning, the UAE Team Emirates team announced that Trentin had withdrawn from the race due to symptoms of post concussion syndrome.

"After a fall in yesterday's second stage and further complaints after the TT, Matteo was re-checked and found to be suffering from post concussion syndrome and has been withdrawn from the race," the team announced on social media (opens in new tab).

Trentin started the 2022 season strong, finishing in the top 10 at both Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne and winning his first race of the campaign at Le Samyn.

The windy Paris-Nice stage 2 saw many fallen riders. After the stage, UAE Team Emirates posted a photo of Trentin holding up his helmet, which was dented by the impact of a fallen bike.

"You only know how important it is to wear a helmet when your head is on the ground!" Trentin wrote. Trentin wrote.

It has been a tough race so far for UAE Team Emirates. Joao Almeida and Brandon McNulty are still in the race for the upcoming hilly stages, but both have already been eliminated from overall contention.
