Remco Evenpole (Quick Step Alpha Vinyl) was banned from driving for three weeks and fined for speeding.
The violation dates back to November 2020, and the sanction was handed down Wednesday in a Belgian court.
According to various Belgian media reports, Evenpole was seen near his home in Chepdahl driving at 125 km/h on a road where the speed limit is 70 km/h.
The 22-year-old was banned from driving for 21 days and fined €400.
Additionally, he will have to take the driving theory test again, as he had held a driver's license for less than two years before the offense took place.
Evenepoel, then 20 years old, was recovering from a horrific accident in Il Lombardia that summer in which he fell into a ravine and broke his pelvis.
According to Het Laatste Nieuws, he overran a sponsored event and was subsequently late for an appointment with a physical therapist.
According to the Belgian newspaper, "To make up the time, he made the wrong decision and accelerated," said Christophe Callebaut, Evenpoel's lawyer.
"In a race you usually get something by going a little faster, but in traffic that doesn't get you anything. He realizes that. That speed is unbearable and he admits he made a mistake."
"He's not an enfant terrible who spews all kinds of nonsense to the press. He leads an exemplary life. He doesn't smoke, he doesn't drink, he doesn't go out. He is incredibly talented and makes sacrifices every day. It seems as if everything happens automatically, but it doesn't at all, and sometimes that is forgotten."
Evenpoel was racing in Tirreno-Adriatico, Italy, and thus could not hear the court's decision in person.
The Belgian, who recently won the Volta ao Algarve, will target the Vuelta a España later this year, his only Grand Tour appearance this season.
