Roglic is cautious but ready for the final Paris-Nice race

Jumbo Visma won his team's third victory on Saturday with a sprint win on the Col de Turini climb.

The Slovenian, who has inherited the lead from teammates Wout Van Aert and Christophe Laporte since stage 5, is best known for the Monte Carlo rally and extended his overall lead further on this climb, his second in Paris-Nice.

He extended his lead over Simon Yates (BikeExchange-Jayco) to eight seconds, with third-placed Dani Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers) a minute behind. It's a comfortable lead for Roglic heading into Sunday's finale in Nice, but given last year's disastrous final day, there is still room for caution with one day remaining.

"It's only a 115-km stage, so there won't be a lot of running around," Roglic said of the day, which features five climbs in the hills around Nice. They're going to come out flying from the start. It will be hard to control."

"We saw last year that it's going to be a super tough race. It's a decisive day and I'm ready."

In last year's race, Roglic crashed twice and dislocated his shoulder on the final day; he had a 52-second lead and struggled to close the gap on his rivals, but eventually lost three minutes and finished the race in 15th place overall.

On Saturday, Grischa Niermann, Jumbo Visma's directeur sportif, was cautious in his comments, but said he, Roglic, and the team were confident.

"We are not going to count ourselves rich yet," Niermann told Het Laatste Nieuws. 'It's another dangerous stage, with lots of ups and downs and one climb after another.'

"There are some difficult descents and the weather will be bad with the rain and cold. I'm confident, but it's not over yet."

Still, after finishing second behind Laporte and Van Aert on stages 1 and 4, Roglic had time to celebrate his first stage win of the new season. He rode through the trini, withstanding attacks from GC rivals, including Yates, and then made his signature quick finish in the final dash.

"It was a fast race from the start, but I felt good. I was able to stay with the attackers like Yates and Nairo Quintana and stay in control. Yes, everything was as expected."

"It was a race of limits. Some of the racers were well matched and we pushed each other to the limit. I had the legs today and it was a great day."

"I'm always a little nervous after winter, so it was good to get confirmation that I'm in good shape.

Afterwards, Roglic celebrated on the podium with his trademark "telemark" jumping pose, and his two-year-old son Lev also joined him on the podium for the now-famous blessing.

"It was the best podium I've ever had. I'm still not 100 percent perfect, so I'm going to practice a little bit more. I'll try to do better next time." [My wife and son] are my biggest fans. I'm happy to win a local climb for them.
