Taddei Pogachar has revealed that he will target Milan-San Remo on Saturday, adding La Classissima to his wins in the UAE Tour, Strade Bianche, and Tirreno-Adriatico.
At just 23 years old, the Tour de France champion is breaking cycling records with 10 stage race wins. And he reaffirmed that the greatest riders, the riders with the widest range of talents, can win the Grand Tours and even classics like Milan-San Remo.
Pogachar's presence in Milano-San Remo changed the race, further reducing the sprinters' chances of success and leaving everyone else scratching their heads as to how to control and beat him.
Pogachar's victory in Tirreno-Adriatico put pressure on his rivals, warning them that he was close to his Tour de France form. Relaxed and laid back as ever, he was eager to turn the cycling narrative upside down by winning Milan-San Remo and continuing his "cannibalistic" career trajectory.
"Everyone keeps asking me what I expect on Saturday. Well, it's going to be a long, hard race. Milan-San Remo is one of the easiest races to finish, but one of the hardest to win. But we will go there with a strong team and give our best," Pogachar said as he headed home from Tirreno-Adriatico, rested and ready for the first monuments of the 2022 season.
"It's one of the hardest races for me to win, and probably the hardest, too.
"Look at the finale. Chipressa is not so steep. There is a poggio, but many riders, including sprinters, can get over it with speed. At that point the race will be decided by a sprint or someone will try a late solo attack. I am not one of those guys who has all the best options to win. Of course, if I have a chance, I will go for it.
Pogachar won the Strade Bianche in early March with a 50km solo attack. He won the Milan-San Remo on a similar long-distance trip, but against much of the odds in modern cycling.
Pogachar has the ability to attack on the Chipressa and Poggio climbs, and UAE Team Emirates seems to be the team of choice to explode the race on the Chipressa and blow away most sprinters.
A small group will clear and Pogachar will attack again on Poggio, which may help him pull away from Wout Van Aert (Jumbo Visma) and others who could sprint to beat him at the finish on Roma Street.
Pogachar suggested that Cipressa could be the decisive point of this year's Milan-San Remo.
"A long-distance attack in Milano-Sanremo would be something special, but I think it is unlikely. But maybe Cipressa could do it. ......"
"I'm sure it will be a great experience," he said with a twinkle in his eye and enthusiasm.
