Hutchinson's gravel tire lineup has expanded with the introduction of the Tundra, the third in a series of drop-bar off-road tires.
The tire is designed to be the most rugged, high-performance tire in Hutchinson's gravel tire lineup, along with the Override, designed to perform on light gravel roads while maintaining speed on public roads, and the Touareg, for more general gravel and dirt roads and are featured in the Best Gravel Tires guide. [According to Hutchinson, the Tundra's design was inspired by the Black Mamba, a cross-country mountain bike tire. It features large knobs that bite into soft terrain, wide spacings that quickly eliminate mud, and high shoulder knobs for predictability and grip in corners. However, they did not completely ignore the high-speed nature of gravel riding, with a more closely spaced tread center spine to keep rolling resistance low on roads and hard-pack surfaces.
The sidewalls are available in black or tan, but color is not the only difference between the two. Both are made with bi-compound rubber with a softer compound in the shoulders to aid deformation and grip, and 127TPI construction, but the black colorway features Hutchinson's "Reinforcement Plus" anti-puncture breaker In contrast, the tan sidewalls have a layer of "Hardskin" grid material that wraps around the tire from bead to bead, forming a mesh-like structure intended to prevent large tire tears. Because these are gravel tires, they are only available in tubeless versions.
According to Hutchinson, the launch is in response to the increasing number of technical terrains that challenge gravel riders. As bikes become more specialized in "fast gravel" and "adventure gravel," the performance of adventure-specific bikes is improving and, as a result, the technicality of the terrain they can handle. For example, the introduction of gravel suspension has further improved the off-road performance of adventure-specific gravel bikes, requiring equally high-performance tires.
The Tundra is Hutchinson's answer to that need, available in tan for £49.95/€54.99 and black for £39.95/€44.99. Both come in sizes 700x40 and 700x45 and weigh 490g and 580g respectively.
