Sonny Colbrelli is recovering in the hospital and has no abnormal heart function, according to the latest medical information released by the Bahrain Victorias team.
The collapsed Italian needed urgent medical attention after finishing second in the opening stage of the Volta a Catalunya on Monday. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital 45 minutes after the stage ended and his condition was said to be "stable" but he was scheduled to undergo a series of tests to understand what had happened.
On Tuesday morning, Bahrain Victorious released a statement revealing that the initial tests had yielded positive results. However, further inspections are scheduled.
"All cardiac tests performed last night showed no signs of concern or decreased function.
"He will undergo further tests today to determine the cause of yesterday's incident."
Colbrelli has been in contact with friends and family from his hospital bed. Overnight, he shared several messages of support on social media that came from colleagues and fans. He also replied to a post by Michael Matthews, winner of the opening stage of Catalunya, thanking and congratulating him.
The Italian sent an audio message to Ciro Scognamiglio, a reporter for La Gazzetta dello Sport, late Monday night.
"I don't remember anything at all. I crossed the line and then fell to the ground," Colbrelli explained.
"I got some water from Soinier, saw a doctor, and then passed out. I remember waking up in the hospital. Now they are watching me, checking me out.
"I was scared at first, but I'm already thinking about when I can race again."
According to a medical communiqué released by the organizers of the Volta a Catalunya race, Colbrelli lost consciousness, had a seizure, and then went into cardiopulmonary arrest. Paramedics were able to recover the situation with CPR and the use of a defibrillator.
However, the medical communiqué was not released on the race's official channels and was quickly removed from social media.
Bahrain Victorious team manager Milan Elsen told Cycling News that the defibrillator was only used to monitor Colbrelli's heart.
Team doctor Daniele Zaccaria traveled from Italy to Spain on Monday night to visit Colbrelli, La Gazzetta dello Sport (opens in new tab) explained.
"When he arrived at the hospital, his consciousness was stable. No medical news of the race has been reported. We will now do a full examination," said the team doctor.
." Initial tests for cardiac enzymes have not highlighted anything, but I want to control everything personally."
