Lusenko fractures collarbone and shoulder in training accident

Alexey Lutsenko will be sidelined for the next few weeks after breaking his collarbone and shoulder in a training fall.

The Kazakhstani rider was training on Mount Teide in Tenerife when he was hit by a gust of wind on a descent and fell; the 29-year-old Lutz was taken to a local hospital, his Astana Kazakstan team confirmed.

Lutsenko will be transferred to Belgium for surgery on Monday.

"Alexey Lutsenko of the Astana Kazakstan team fell this afternoon while training in Teide, Tenerife, Spain.

"He was hit by a sudden gust of wind on the descent and crashed on his left shoulder. After the crash, Alexei was transferred to a local hospital where he was diagnosed with a displaced clavicle and shoulder fracture.

"Tomorrow, Alexey Lutsenko will be transferred to Belgium for surgery.

Lutsenko had not raced since Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in late February, but had already scored his first win of the season. He had won the first gravel race, the Classica Haen Paraiso Interiors, single-handedly ahead of Tim Wellens.

He then finished ninth overall at the Vuelta a AndalucĂa in February, but failed to finish in the Omloop.

As a result of crashes and injuries, Lutsenko was forced to miss the Ardennes Classic. Later in the season, he will aim for the Tour de France, where he unexpectedly finished seventh last July.

The date of Lutsenko's return to racing is unknown.
