Egan Bernal already back on the road

Egan Bernal, whose life was threatened in a collision with a bus, returned to racing just two months after the accident.

The Ineos Grenadiers rider took to social media to celebrate his recovery with fellow riders, including his brother Ronald and teammate and friend Brandon Rivera, in the scenic hills of the Colombian countryside.

"This is the happiest day of my life," Bernal said on Instagram. 'Two months and 20 broken bones later, here I am.'

According to a post-accident medical update from Ineos Grenadiers, Bernal suffered a fractured vertebra, fractured right femur, fractured right patella, chest trauma, lung puncture, and broken ribs. According to a hospital update, he was treated at ClĂnica Universidad de La Sabana, which outlined complex spinal surgery, surgery to correct fractures of the knee, femur, and right metacarpal, and surgery to address a fractured alveolar bone in his mouth.

The injuries occurred on January 24, when Bernal hit a bus at nearly 65 km/h while riding his time trial bike, and the athlete stated that there was a 95 percent chance that he could be paralyzed from the lower body.

However, a series of updates on social media have documented the 25-year-old's rapid recovery, taking his first steps less than three weeks after the collision and then moving from an exercise bike to an upright one on an indoor trainer. He has also been working on his rehabilitation in the pool.

Earlier this month, his coach, Xavier Arteste, told La Gazzetta dello Sport that Bernal is motivated and very eager to return. 'He is working hard to get back as soon as possible, maybe in 2023, maybe at the end of this year. We must not rule out that possibility.
