Trek Segafredo announced Monday that Amanuel Gebrigxabier was seriously injured in a high-speed crash on the final stage of the Volta a Catalunya. While the whole of Eritrea was celebrating the historic victory of his compatriot Biniam Girmay, Gebreigxabier, a 27-year-old climbing talent, was being treated in the emergency department of the Barcelona Hospital Clinic. Trek-Segafredo doctor Manuel Rodriguez Alonso said in a team press release that he suffered a severe contusion to his right chest as a result of a fall in the last few kilometers of the final stage, which was won by Andrea Bagioli (Quick-Step Alfa Vinyl). He suffered a "severe injury," he said. Rodriguez Alonso said, "A comprehensive examination revealed that he has severe contusions in his right chest and abdomen, as well as damage to several organs." Amanuel is currently in a stable condition and is undergoing conservative treatment by the Barcelona medical team. Doctors will continue to monitor his condition over the next few days to determine if surgery is necessary." Gebré Xavier, a four-time African Continental champion, is in his sixth season at the World Tour level, having raced for Dimension Data/NTT before moving to Trek-Segafredo in 2021. He has two top-10 stage finishes and a sixth place overall finish at the Tour du Var. He plans to compete in the Vuelta a España later this season, but is unsure when he will be able to return to training, much less compete. Rodriguez Alonso said, "It will be a few months before Amanuel can race again, but fortunately there is no irreversible damage at the moment."
