Summerhill suspended for one year for Adderall positive

Best Buddies Racing Team has temporarily removed Danny Summerhill from its roster after the Colorado native accepted a one-year suspension for failing to receive an appropriate therapeutic use exemption for Adderall, which is used to treat attention deficit disorder (ADD). The company announced that it had removed him from the roster.

Summerhill finished second to L39ION's Tyler Williams in the 2021 Athens Twilight Criterium and second in the Springfield Criterium while a guest of the team, and after a successful return to form, he was in the criterium's specialist group. He was scheduled to race. Last August he took his first win in Hapeville, Georgia, and tested positive after his second win at the Hammerfest Criterium in Birmingham, Alabama, on August 14, 2021.

He was informed of the results last September.

Best Buddies' new team director, Thomas Craven, expects to have Summerhill on the team this September when his ban expires. He said, "The drug in question was prescribed by Danny's doctor before he announced his retirement and joined the team in 2021. Danny has since received a therapeutic use exemption for this prescription." We look forward to Danny returning to the starting lineup in September."

The 33-year-old Summerhill has been an avid and successful racer since his teenage years, winning junior national cyclocross titles in 2005 and U23 titles in 2009 and 2010. He road raced for the Chipotle Development team before signing with UnitedHealthcare in 2013.

He raced for the Pro Continental team until 2017 after he was seen firing a gun into a rural hillside outside Denver on February 21, 2017 and was arraigned on May 30, 2017 on charges of "disorderly conduct, firing a weapon in a public place, and reckless endangerment", He resigned on May 30, 2017. Summerhill was identified in his Pro Team kit and admitted that he was on a training ride in Deer Creek Canyon and "needed to vent before getting back to the car."

Summerhill was also a member of USA Cycling's men's Team Pursuit team to qualify for the Olympics in 2019.

Summerhill began taking Adderall to treat symptoms of ADD, which can lead to behavioral dysregulation if untreated, and was exacerbated by the stress of the pandemic and his father's diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, according to a statement provided by the team.

"In the summer of 2020, I felt my professional cycling career was over; COVID-19 had closed the race; I was no longer able to compete in the race. The sport was full of uncertainty. And having spent my entire adult life racing, I was burnt out," Summerhill wrote.

"I walked away from cycling and thought I'd never look back, but after an 11-month break, I realized I wasn't ready to quit. I contacted Michael Hernandez and participated in a few races at Best Buddies as a guest rider. But as some of you may have noticed, since September 2021, I have been absent."

"After winning in Birmingham, I was tested by USADA. The results were positive. However, this issue and the stories that follow have proven that I am not alone. I want to share the story as authentically as I can, while respecting this sport, my teammates, and the Best Buddies organization."

"The past two years have been difficult for all of us. Personally, in the midst of the unrest and pandemic, a doctor diagnosed my father with Alzheimer's disease. To cope with the stress of caring for my father and working in the rental real estate business, I sought help from my doctor and therapist. Under their guidance, I began taking antidepressants along with ADD medications.

"I never thought I would share such intimate details. Context is important. I was diagnosed with ADD in 1995 and prescribed Adderall. I avoided medication for years because of the stigma attached to it in the professional sports world. But the weight of 2020 became too much. I sought help.

"As a guest rider, I thought I would only be in a handful of races. But I found my way back to the podium. I am an ADD and forgetful person, so I made a mistake.

"I expect to get a TUE, but I have been suspended by USADA/WADA from official USAC competition for one year. In the meantime, I will support the Best Buddies team and organization. I encourage everyone to learn more about this organization, volunteer, and be compassionate about your own mental health struggles. Stay safe and I will see you in September."
