ASO Announces Netflix Series on Tour de France

Tour de France organizer ASO has announced a partnership with Netflix and France Télévisions to air an eight-part documentary series on the 2022 Tour in early 2023.

Filming will take place from March of this year through the Tour in July; eight teams have pledged to participate, but not including UAE Team Emirates, home to two-time Tour winner Tadej Pogachar. [AG2R Citroën, Alpecin-Fenix, Bora-Hansgrohe, EF Education-EasyPost, Groupama-FDJ, Ineos Grenadiers, Jumbo-Visma, and QuickStep-AlphaVinyl are among the series, with 45-minute episodes airing in 190 territories worldwide.

"We are proud of our partnership with Netflix, France Télévisions and the Tour de France teams. [Through the narrative approach added to the competition itself, the public can see how the Tour de France is the ultimate challenge for competitors. 9]

Quadbox, a joint venture between Quad Productions, producers of the F1 "Drive to Survive" series, and Box to Box Films, will produce the series.

Reports of a "Drive to Survive"-style series coming to the Tour began in early March in the British newspaper The Telegraph, which reported that the F1 series, which has aired for four seasons on Netflix, had boosted ratings 53% after its initial run. Netflix's four seasons of the F1 series have boosted ratings by 53% after their initial airing, and cycling is expected to show a similar response.

While the benefits to the participating teams have yet to be confirmed, Cyclingnews understands that each of the eight teams will receive 50,000 euros in compensation.

EF Education-EasyPost boss Jonathan Vaughters told Cyclingnews that he believes the teams, organizers, and the sport will all be rewarded from the series.

"It pains me to say this, but I think ASO is helping the sport in general with this project, and I agree with that," Vaughters said.

"Media rights contracts around the world are based on audience numbers. So if cycling as a sport becomes more popular, the Tour de France will become more popular. So of course they will benefit."

UAE Team Emirates admitted that it had been approached to participate in the series. The team, along with other leading teams Bahrain Victorious, Trek Segafredo, and Movistar, would not participate in the new documentary at this time, but did not rule out future participation.

"It is true that UAE Team Emirates, like several other teams, was approached to participate in the program. However, the terms of being the protagonists of the first season were not agreed," UAE Team Emirates told Cyclingnews.

"We like the general idea, but there is no pressure to rush into anything. The door is open for us to join in the future."
