Gianni Moscon Ends Classic Season Early in "Subzero" Conditions

Gianni Moscon, who has struggled to get going so far in the spring classics season, has decided to put an end to his campaign.

The Italian, who finished fourth in last year's rainy race, has failed to make an impact on the cobbles this season, failing to finish in four races in Belgium, including Sunday's Tour de Flanders.

Moscon, who moved to Astana Kazakstan from Ineos Grenadiers on a two-year contract in the winter, said conditions were "sub-zero" this spring.

"My northern campaign is in the archives," Moscon wrote on Instagram. 'My conditions are sub-zero, but as always, I gave all I could give, which was very little this year.'

Moscon's season got off to a bad start when he tested positive for COVID-19, suffered an attack of bronchitis, and lost three weeks of training; he recovered to make his season debut at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in late February but was unable to compete in the 2022 He rarely finished in the top 100 in results in the first 16 days of racing in 2022.

A DNF in Flanders capped off a miserable run in Belgium, where he finished 134th in the Bruges des Pins classic and failed to finish in the E3 Saxo Bank classic, Ghent-Wevelgem, and Doire de Flenderen.

Moscon is suited to Paris-Roubaix, finishing fifth in 2017 and fourth last October after an unfortunate late puncture. However, the 27-year-old chose to forgo the race and focus on gaining full fitness and form for later goals.

"I continue to struggle for condition, but it seems more and more like a distant mirage now. 'As soon as I can, I'm going to take a break to get back into condition. I will definitely come back. I will never give up."
