Tom Pidcock said after the Amstel Gold Race, a year after narrowly losing to Wout Van Art, "I can't get flicked two years in a row, can I?"
He narrowly missed winning the 2021 Amstel Gold Race by a photo finish, but teammate MichaĆ Kwiatkowski held off Benoit Kosnefrois (AG2R Citroen) to win the race at the finish line on Sunday. Pidcock and Kwiatkowski attacked and countered on the final climb of the Cauberg and on the start-finish line with 22km to go. Pidcock said after the race that the team's plan was always to outnumber them in the finals, as a dramatic finish line turnaround gave Koznefroi the win.
"This was the plan. Dylan [van Baar] didn't have the legs to be in the lead group with us. But we wanted the numbers and we were going to make the most of them in the final. And that's what we did
"Kwiatkowski was in the front and I was protecting the back. I felt bad for everyone, but it's my job. I think that was definitely our strength and we played to it." The team pulled back on the braking earlier in the day and worked as hard as possible on the 33 hills during the race. As a result, Pidcock, who had been sick the day before the race, and Kwiatkowski, who had been struggling since the start of the season after suffering from numerous physical problems, took the lead.
"He's a super veteran, so it's great to race with him," said Pidcock, a teammate who won this race in 2015 and is rarely outside the top 10 in Limburg. 'It's great to race with him and to be on the same team as him. It's great to see him win again. I was a little bit worried about how it would go because I've been sick this week," Pidcock said. But today was pretty good. I've been sick all week, so it wasn't bad, but I didn't ride hard. I just rode easy. So usually when I'm too fresh, I'm a little bit worse."
Another rider who impressed the team was 2022 Classic breakthrough star, neo-pro Ben Turner, a 22-year-old who has often finished at the top of his game in cobbled races, including an eighth-place finish in Dwars door Hlaanderen, which helped Pidcock to a podium finish. He has often finished in the top half of races in the Classics.
According to Turner, the team has been very successful in the Classics and throughout Europe this spring, with memorable stage wins by Eddie Dunbar in the Settimana Coppi e Bartali, Dani Martinez in Ituria, and Carlos Rodriguez in the same race.
"I think as a team, as one team, we were phenomenal. I honestly didn't know we won until five minutes ago. These players are phenomenal, it's neo-pro to be a part of this, and it's great to learn from all of them. Not only did the Classic team win, but Danny won this week, and so did Carlos. It's great. It's been a great year. We're gaining momentum now and showing what we're capable of."
[16As for Turner himself, he said he believes he has already proven a lot in just his first few months at Ineos. He joined in the winter from Trinity Racing, a Continental team founded around Pidcock, also in Yorkshire, in 2020.
"I don't want to sound cocky, but I pushed myself a lot," Turner said. [21] "Because of my crash last year, people didn't know who I was," Turner said. I think we proved a lot this year. It's great to be a part of this team and to be able to compete in the biggest race in the world. 'It's great to be part of this team and to be in the biggest race in the world.'
