The Tour of Turkey came to an end Monday after Arkea Samsic's Nasser Buhanni crashed into a spectator on the second stage. In a dramatic video posted on Twitter, a man walks down the course with his back to the oncoming peloton. Spectators on the sidewalk shouted at him in alarm, and another fan dressed in bright yellow hurriedly tried to pull the man off the road. But it was already too late, as Mirko Maestri (Eolo Cometa) came between the two pedestrians and crashed first, sending them both to the ground. Behind them, Buhanni, teammate Kevin Ledanois, and Manuel Peñal Bell (Burgos-BH) crashed hard.
Bouhanni was taken to a nearby hospital, where the Arkea-Samsik team later confirmed that he had fractured his first cervical vertebra. He is currently receiving treatment at Izmir Hospital and will soon be repatriated to France for further treatment.
Burgos-BH confirmed that Peñalver suffered a fracture of his elbow that will require surgery. Ledanois and Maestri were able to continue competing. The Italian posted a photo on his social media of himself covered in road rash and said, "Sometimes you have to get up and push harder than ever ...... thinking it won't hurt," he said.
Team Arkea Samsic's bad luck continued later in the stage when Nairo Quintana crashed twice in the final kilometer of the sprint finish won by Kayden Groves (Team Bike Exchange-Jayco), losing 1:44 and any hope of fighting for the overall.
According to the team, Quintana suffered severe abrasions on his left side and back, but will start stage 3 on Tuesday.
According to Cycling News sources, Bouhanni had an upset stomach overnight and started the stage to see how far he could ride.
