After putting prototypes on the feet of BikeExchange-Jayco riders like Adam Yates, Giant took input from the top of the sport, and with a new upper design, a more adjustable fit, and a new "dual-beam ExoBeam" outsole, and a comprehensive overhaul to the existing Surge Pro, including maintaining heel-to-toe stiffness while allowing for some lateral flex.
Giant's top-tier shoe, the Surge Pro has not been updated since 2018, and while the DNA remains similar, the name is the most obvious similarity between the two.
The new version still uses Giant's Exobeam sole concept, a 100% carbon sole that allows some torsion in the sole to protect the ankle and knee joints while maintaining front and rear stiffness for pedaling efficiency, narrowing under the arch of the foot from side to side but thicker. The previous model had a single carbon "beam" in the midfoot, but this new model has a more traditional sole, at least in appearance. The beam is still distinctive, but the sole itself is wider.
The upper is polyurethane mesh with laser-cut perforations to aid cooling. The closure system, which previously used two Boa closures, has been enhanced by a Velcro strap in the forefoot for a more adjustable fit. Velcro straps are becoming a rarity in the best cycling shoes, but Giant still clearly believes in their role. Giant claims that the fit it prides itself on is based on its 360-degree foot closure system, which pulls the foot up to reach the upper rather than pushing the upper of the foot into the sole. The "Giant" branding is also applied from the upper to the sole for a cleaner aesthetic.
The Boa dials have not been spared an update either, with a thinner, smaller-diameter Li2 version of the well-established system.
The removable sockliner features an adjustable arch support system, upper seams are welded rather than sewn, and the heel cup is made of SharkSkin material.
The Giant Surge Pro is available in three colors: white, black ("Gunmental"), and iridescent blue ("Chromaflair"). Sizes EU 41-48, half sizes 41.5-45.5.
If you want to put your foot in one, they are available for $399 / £299 / €350.
