After Team DSM's in-race tire management system caused so much excitement in the cycling technology world, the team decided to postpone the maiden voyage of the system to the cobbled stages of the Tour de France.
The Dutch company Scope, in collaboration with Team DSM, has developed technology that allows riders to adjust tire pressure while riding.
This is done using an air reservoir housed in the hub and connected to the rim and tubeless tire via a mechanical valve and hose. Through handlebar controls, tire pressure is changed electronically and can be tracked in real time directly from the cycle computer.
The news that the team would be using this technology in such a major race was greeted with excitement throughout the cycling community, with many riders commenting on the technology's potential at pre-race press conferences.
Scope Cycling's website shows an image on its product page of what appears to be Team DSM using Scope's tire management system on the cobbled Recon, but then decided not to use it at Paris-Roubaix.
A DSM press release states, "Since 2020, Team DSM and Scope have been working to develop a tire pressure management system that allows riders to adjust tire pressure while riding their bikes.
"This week on the cobblestones confirmed our confidence in this system and the overall setup, so we decided to debut it at the TDF, which will be raced on cobblestone stages."
The team's press release also states.
Although it is clear that a long time was spent developing the technology, the UCI approved it for use in road racing on April 1.
In Paris-Roubaix, the release stated, "The rider must be fully integrated with the bike and have intuitive control over all components.
"We will spend more time riding with this system and are confident that it will become a major movement in the sport.
Other brands have also introduced new bikes and components at Paris-Roubaix, including Quick Step using Specialized's unreleased wheels and tires and Elisa Longo Borghini winning the Paris-Roubaix fam using the unreleased Trek Domane
In addition, the brand's new bikes and components are being introduced at Paris-Roubaix.
