SD Works, winner of three of the first five editions of the Liège-Bastogne-Liège Women's race, returns to the race on Sunday looking to extend its dominance with its strongest team on the start line in Bastogne.
Two-time winner Anna van der Breggen will ride in the team car, while champion Demi Vollering will lead the team along with Ashley Moolman Passio. Chantal van den Broeck-Braak and Marlen Reusser are even stronger options for the team, along with young talents Blanca Vas and Niamh Fischer-Black. [But of the 129 women who will start the 142-km race through the hills of the Ardennes, the most notable will be Vollaring. Volering, who wears this number 1, has already won Brabantspaille this spring (solo victory) and has also been on the podium at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Amstel Gold Race, and La Flèche Wallonne.
Vollering is hoping to upgrade from her third place in the latter last Wednesday. At Saturday's team presentation, she said she hopes the style of racing at Liège-Bastogne-Liège will be to her liking.
"My legs felt good today on the recovery ride. I always look forward to this race. I didn't feel so good in Flèche because I was a little sleepy in the beginning of the race and I don't really like it because I fall asleep," Volering joked.
"At some point you have to turn it on and it's already a final. But Liège is always full of gas from the start and I like that, so I expect to be better tomorrow."
[10She shares leadership with Mourman Passio, who is in his last Liege before retiring. South African Moolman Passio finished fourth in Flèche, but could have done better after suffering mechanical trouble with 20km to go and being worn out in the chase that followed.
"It's a shame to miss the podium. I'm happy for Demi to be on the podium, but right now I'm hungry for a win. I have good memories of Demi winning here last year.
"We are very motivated and in strong form.
Mourman-Pasio called Liège a "war of attrition," adding that it will be important to conserve energy in a hilly race. However, she added that the depth of athletes that SD Walks has will help.
"We have the numbers. We can win tomorrow with any of our players. I think that's our big advantage and we need to take advantage of our numbers. I want to race different scenarios and see which one works
"I know I have very good legs and I'm motivated after the disappointment of La Flèche Wallonne. So I want to win the Spring Classic. It's my last season and that would be really special."
Volering said that last year's victory will not be a pressure this time around. Last year, the 25-year-old won from a group that included Annemiek van Fruten, Elisa Longo Borghini, and Kasia Nieviadoma, following van der Breggen's lead out.
She said it was not worth worrying about the day before when the results would come out tomorrow.
"No extra pressure or anything," Volering said. 'I really like this race. It's also a race that doesn't lie. It's a really hard race and you have to have the legs for the day to run it. You just need to survive climb after climb and feel what happens afterwards, what will happen. We can't worry about it now, but we have to look at tomorrow.
"Whatever happens tomorrow, I think we can do anything because we have so many different talents in this group," she concluded.
