The Giro d'Italia is not going as Team Jumbo-Visma had hoped. Their overall contender, Tom Dumoulin, dropped out of contention after the first summit finish on Mount Etna, and Sam Omen suffered a severe accidental crash in Messina on stage 5.
After the Giro stage, the Dutchman, who was pedaling to the team bus at the end of the Giro stage, graciously handed Bidon to one of the tifosi. However, as he attempted to cross his body to hand the bottle to the man on his left, the man's musette strap caught on his handlebars and the omen crashed to the ground.
The Jumbo Visma team later announced on social media that Oomen "appears to be fine" after this accident.
Oomen was an important climbing domestique for Dumoulin at the 2018 Giro d'Italia, when he was a member of Team Sunweb. That year, Dumoulin finished second and Oomen finished ninth. They met again in 2021 at Jumbo Visma.
A crash on stage 5, 192 km from Catania to Messina, brought back memories of the 2003 Tour de France, when Lance Armstrong was knocked down by a spectator musette on the final climb of Luz-Arden. Armstrong got up and finished the stage to win the Tour. He later lost that title when he was permanently banned for doping.
