Baril goes on the attack from 2nd place in Ituria women's final

Olivia Baril (Barcal Travel & Service) had the best result of her career so far, winning the GP Ciudad de Eibar less than a week ago, followed by second place in the second stage of the Iturria women's race.

After overall leader Demi Volering (Team SD Walks) and Marta Cavalli (FDJ Nouvelle Aquitaine Futuroscope) attacked on the Category 1 Calabieta climb, Baril was joined by Pauliena Loijackers (Canyon-SRAM) and Baril was part of a five-man lead group that included Pauliena Reujckers (Canyon-SRAM) and Juliette Labusse (Team DSM), and rode well in the uphill sprint to stay ahead of Vollaring. I am very happy with today's result. The team is trying to bring me up to GC in this race. It's very sobering," said Baril after the finish. Baril, who improved on most of his rivals, moved up 13 places in the overall standings and now sits in 5th place overall, 1:01 behind Voerling and just 1 second behind Cavalli in 4th place.

"It was a really hard race. The heat was a factor and I knew that the last climb would decide the race. Attack, attack, attack ...... The Canadian was pleased with his performance, "I was chasing, but today my legs were good and I was able to stay with Demi Vollering," he said. Baril is something of a newcomer to racing at the highest level, but her career trajectory has been on the upswing in recent years, although it was interrupted by the 2020 race cancellation due to COVID. Baril, who had previously raced exclusively in Canada, joined the Canadian/French Macojep-Tornatec-Girondin team in 2018 and remained with the team through 2020. Her first standout results in Europe were at the 2019 Vuelta a Burgos (before the race was elevated to the Women's World Tour) and a 19th place finish in the two-day stage race in Brittany, Kreiz Bleisch. Her 2020 season was cut short after a sixth-place finish at the Dubai Women's Tour, when the Covid 19 pandemic closed the cycling calendar, but Baril made an important change later that year when she moved to the Basque Country. 'I've lived in Donostia since September 2020, I love the Basque Country and I love to ride here. Wherever I go in the world, whether it's Belgium or Italy, I see Basque fans. They love cycling." Baril has signed with Spanish team Massi Tactic for 2021. Her best result was 12th in the sprint at the Vuelta CV Feminas, but she has gained much experience at the Vuelta a Burgos, La Course, Donostia Classicoa, and the Serratigit Challenge. Before the 2022 season, the 24-year-old moved to Valcar Travel & Service, the team that trained top riders such as world champion Elisa Balsamo, Marta Cavalli, and Maria Giulia Confalonieri. Baril made his presence felt in the Tour de Flanders when he joined a 120km breakaway group. In the Ardennes, she finished 22nd in the Amstel Gold Race, 16th in La Flèche Wallonne Féminine, and finished 7th overall in the top 10 at the Elsie Jacob Festival. The weekend before the Iturria women's race, Baril took her first UCI win at GP Ciudad de Eibar in a manner reminiscent of her second stage win in Voreling: women's WorldTour stars Mavi Garcia (UAE Team ADQ) and Ane Santesteban (Team BikeExchange-Jayco), chasing them on the race's final climb and then dropping them both on the descent. The final third stage of the Iturian women's race on Sunday will start and finish in Donostia, Baril's birthplace.
