It has been a good season for Cillin van Unrooy (Trek Segafredo). As a member of the team's classic team, the 20-year-old Dutchwoman played a key role in Elisa Balsamo's victory, but van Ambrooy herself also performed well enough to take the top spot in the Women's World Tour U23 ranking.
Wearing the light blue leader's jersey in the first WWT stage race, the Ituriá women's, Juan Anloy struggled with the weather in the first two stages but made up for it in the third and final stage.
"Today really gave me confidence for Burgos next week. Markel [Irizar, Trek-Segafredo's sport director] and the team kept believing in me and they wanted to win the stage. I was nervous because I knew it was going to be warm again, but I felt like my body could push a lot harder than in the first two days when I didn't feel like myself," said van Ambrooy, who finished the race feeling great.
The course for the final stage was a copy of the 2021 Clasica San Sebastián course, and van Ambrooy explained that last year's race influenced her tactics and her decision to attack with Jeanne Correval (Liv Racing-Exstra) at the 25km mark. She explained.
"Last year the breakaway lasted until Murguil, so this year I was going to enter the breakaway between Jaizkibel and Murguil. When I saw Kolevar going, I thought it was a good time to follow her since it wasn't that far from the finish. But to be honest, I didn't think I could make the gap to around the bottom of Murguil," she explained.
Entering the climb 35 seconds ahead of the peloton, van Ambrooy emerged as the strongest rider from a three-rider breakaway that included Morgane Coston (Arkea Pro Cycling Team), dropping Kolevar and Coston in the first half of the 2km climb. However, a steep gradient of up to 19% took its toll, and Van Anului was reeled in 300 meters from the summit.
"That climb was really tough," said Van Anului. It wasn't as bad as I remember it being last year, but it was really tough. I tried to ride at my own pace, but I could feel the chasing group coming up on me."
Van Unrooy, who was in a group of 10 behind Demi Vollaring (Team SD Works), who won his third stage solo, recovered enough to sprint for the win in Donostia, finishing in fifth place.
"I really love races with a lot of climbing. Last year was the first time I raced in San Sebastián and I really enjoyed it. It's a really hard race with all the climbs, and the heat made it even harder," van Ambrooy said.
Juan Anroy, whose contract with Trek-Segafredo for road and Valoise Trek-Lions for cyclo-cross was extended in early May until the end of 2025, is looking forward to the Vuelta a Burgos, where he will continue wearing the light blue WWT U23 jersey.
