Lotto Soudal's Caleb Yuan came to the Giro d'Italia looking for a stage win. Yuan will leave the race this week before the alpine stages and intends to focus on the Tour de France as early as Wednesday.
"I don't know the exact stages yet. It will be somewhere between stage 11 and stage 13. After (stage) 13, it will be too hard for me, so I won't go. And of course I have to think about the Tour. If I'm in good shape, I'll go to stage 13, if I'm not, I'll ride the sprint of stage 11 and then stop.
Ewan came close to victory on the climb to Visegrad in Hungary, but crashed in the final meters after hitting the rear wheel of Intermarché's Biniam Girmay. He was second in Scalea behind Arnaud Demare. First there is a hilly stage 10 to Jessi on Tuesday, then a "pan-flat" stage 11 to Reggio Emilia on Wednesday, followed by an intermediate mountain stage 12, and then an almost certain sprint in Cuneo on Friday.
Ewan admitted that the lack of victories so far is "not ideal." He said, "We came here to win a stage or more and we haven't done that yet. We still have a chance. But I've been in similar situations before, so I know I have to keep doing what I'm doing. And hopefully one day it will work out and we can win a stage."
The Lotto-Soudal leadout train started the Giro d'Italia without one of its key members, Jasper De Boist, who suffered a broken collarbone and pelvis in a crash at the Tour of Turkey. The team reworked its plans with Rüdiger Zelig in his place, but the German was unable to complete Sunday's Brockhaus stage.
"Obviously, it's a pretty big loss for our leadout train because he was the last one out," Ewan said. 'We have to rethink the way we do our sprints. We have to rethink the way we do sprints. Yeah, I mean, it's all over. He went home. So we'll just look forward to the next sprint and see what we can do differently without him."
De Baist and Ewan have worked together for four seasons." He is someone I can trust in the finals to get me where I need to be." The promotion to last man is a big adjustment, especially in the Grand Tours. He added: "The Giro is probably not the time to learn that kind of thing. He said, "I think if Rudy, Jasper, and I had been there, it would have been a super strong train. It's a big loss without him."
Lotto Soudal took the stage win in Naples thanks to Thomas De Gendt, who attacked from the breakaway that day.
"Most of the pressure for a stage win comes from myself. The important thing is that Thomas's win took the pressure off the whole team.
"Whatever happens in this Giro, at least we have one win.
