Police Obtain Search Warrant in Moriah Wilson Murder Case

The Austin Police Department (APD) has obtained a search warrant for a home in south Austin, Texas, in connection with the shooting death of gravel racer Moriah Wilson, according to a report in the investigative news media outlet KXAN (opens in new tab).

Wilson was shot and killed on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at her home in East Austin, Texas. Wilson was visiting Texas to compete in the Gravel Locos on Saturday in Hico, midway between Austin and Dallas.

According to the warrant, Wilson went swimming with a friend that evening and returned home shortly after 8:30 PM. Camera footage from a nearby house showed him pulling up near the house around 8:36 p.m.

In an initial report by CBS Austin (opens in new tab) on Thursday, May 12, an APD spokesperson said the victim was found by a friend unresponsive in his East Austin home, although his name was unknown at that time. The APD spokesperson also said that police are treating the shooting as "suspicious"; a separate report by Velonews (opens in new tab) on Friday, May 13, identified Wilson as the victim.

On Saturday, May 14, APD published an official report (opens in new tab) on its Facebook channel, responding to a 9-1-1 dispatch call on Wednesday, May 11, at approximately 9:56 p.m., in which a woman returning to her East Austin home found her friend Wilson unresponsive She confirmed that she had.

"Investigators arrived on scene and found a 25-year-old female with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers and paramedics performed life-saving measures. However, the victim died from her injuries. The victim was Anna Moriah Wilson; according to an APD statement, Wilson was pronounced dead at 10:10 p.m. by Dr. Escott.

"The investigation revealed that someone shot Wilson inside a home on Maple Street. Detectives have identified a suspect. There was no reason to suspect a threat to the public and the shooting did not appear to be a random act.

"On May 12, 2022, the Travis County Coroner performed an autopsy and determined that the official cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds and the cause of death was homicide.
