Austin Police Department (APD) issued an arrest warrant in connection with the murder of gravel road cyclist Moriah Wilson. The arrest warrant names Caitlin Marie Armstrong, 34, as wanted for first-degree felony murder.
The arrest warrant was signed by Judge Patrick McNelis through Austin Municipal Court-Travis County District Court on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, and filed on Thursday, May 19, 2022. According to the filing, Armstrong is white, female, and was born on November 21, 1987; APD confirmed to Cyclingnews that Armstrong has not yet been arrested.
Wilson was shot and killed on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at her home in East Austin, Texas. Wilson was visiting Texas to compete in the Gravel Locos on Saturday in Hico, halfway between Austin and Dallas.
On Saturday, May 14, APD released an official report (opens in new tab) to its Facebook channel, stating that on Wednesday, May 11, at approximately 9:56 p.m., a woman returning to her East Austin home found her friend Wilson unresponsive, responding to a 9-1-1 dispatch call APD confirmed that the incident was being treated as a homicide and that they had identified those involved.
On Tuesday, May 17, investigative news organization KXAN reported that APD obtained a search warrant for a home in south Austin, Texas, in connection with the shooting.
According to the search warrant, Wilson went swimming with friends that evening and returned home shortly after 8:30 PM. Camera footage from a nearby house showed a car pulling up near the house at approximately 8:36 PM.
Armstrong is the live-in partner of gravel racer Colin Strickland, who is named as the "partner and financial guru" of his business, Wheelhouse. Strickland released a statement posted on social media Friday by KVUE Austin investigative journalist Tony Plohetski.
Cyclingnews obtained a copy of the arrest warrant and spoke with APD on Thursday and the Austin Municipal Court on Friday to confirm that the investigation is ongoing.
The U.S. Marshals Service Lone Star Fugitive Task Force requested the public's help on Friday in locating murder suspect Armstrong. The task force is actively conducting a fugitive investigation and is following up on leads regarding her whereabouts.
