Simon Yates took his second stage win of the year after soloing away from the elite GC contenders in an intense non-stop race in Turin at the end of stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia.
Yates' sixth stage win of the Giro was a consolation after he was eliminated from overall contention after losing over 11 minutes on the Brockhaus climb on stage 9.
However, speaking after the stage, he said he did not see it that way and instead came to Italy with only one thing in mind: winning the race.
He was asked in a flash interview after the stage if the victory had made him feel any less frustrated, to which he replied, "Not really."
"I don't mean to speak ill of today, but I came here to win the race. It's a different stage for me. I've already won five races and this is my sixth."
Nevertheless, Yates was trying to get into the day's breakaway group right from the start of the hilly 147km stage across Piedmont. He was aggressive on the uncategorized climbs early in the day, but in the end it took him 50 km to break away.
However, Bora-Hansgrohe had a different strategy for this stage, as he caught the breakaway just 30km later at the base of the first climb, Sperga.
Yates was one of the few GC men to stay with this elite group, and the pace and attacks chipped away at the group. On the final climb of the day, the Colle della Maddalena, he caught up with Richard Calapas, Vincenzo Nibali, and Jai Hindley.
"I tried a few times early on, but it was impossible. 'I tried to set up a couple of times, but I don't know if the group was too big or if I wasn't allowed to go.'
"So I had to change tactics and chase the stages normally. I was lucky that Bora tried to chase the stages and GC. From there I did my best."
BikeExchange-Jayco sport director Matt White praised the efforts of Yates and his teammates for turning things around following Brockhaus' disappointment and early termination of his GC challenge.
"It was a big win. It was great to see the team and Simon turn things around. Things didn't go as planned, but being able to turn things around is a true test of a person's character. Simon ran a very impressive race today. What a race
"He was the only one in the lead group with nothing to lose. The other riders were riding for GC and marking each other. Simon had to stay calm. And he didn't. ......"
.Yates added that he hopes to replicate this performance in the final week of the Giro as they enter the Alps and the Dolomites.
"I hope my legs continue to feel as good as they did today. Today was a really big effort, not only for me but for everyone. If this heat continues, the final week will be very tough."
