Caicedo misses Giro d'Italia after testing positive for COVID-19

Jonathan Caicedo (EF Education - Easy Post) left the Giro d'Italia this morning due to a positive test for COVID-19. However, the other members of the team tested negative and will continue to compete.

The EF Education-Easy Post team announced the news on social media Tuesday morning after the rest day that Caicedo, from Ecuador, will not start stage 16. Caicedo is reportedly "symptom free" and will self-isolate according to regulations before being allowed to move.

The 29-year-old Caicedo, a former Ecuadorian road race and time trial champion, had been an active part of the breakaway, including the stage 9 blockhouse, and was in 56th place overall. The biggest win of his career came on a stage of the 2020 Giro d'Italia.

EF Education-Easy Post has had its problems so far in the Giro d'Italia. Caicedo was the third rider to leave the team, following the British pairing of Simon Kerr and Owain Doull, who withdrew after the first two days of the first week. Carr and Doull both complained of stomach problems.

Team DSM's Romain Bardet was forced to retire on stage 13 with a stomach complaint.

The team led by Jonathan Vaughters has yet to win a Giro this year, with their best result so far being a fourth-place finish by Magnus Kort on stage 1 and Hugh Kersee on stage 15.

Caicedo's positive test is the first confirmed case of coronavirus infection at this year's Giro d'Italia.
