Sponsor drops Strickland after admitting "proximity" to Wilson shooting

As details of the shooting death of Moriah "Mo" Wilson emerged this weekend, a prominent sponsor of Colin Strickland cut off his support for the gravel racer.

Strickland, 35, has not been charged with any crime in the case and has cooperated with authorities. In an official statement released last week, he admitted to being involved with both Wilson and the suspect, Caitlin Marie Armstrong, 34, who is at large in her death. Specialized told Cycling News that it was terminating the contract, saying, "As of Saturday, May 21, Specialized will terminate its contract with Colin Strickland and he will no longer be a sponsored athlete of the brand."

Clothing manufacturer Rapha also fired Strickland and, along with bicycle supplier Allied Cycle Works, removed a web page that had mentioned Strickland's Specialized clothing collection. According to an affidavit released by a major news organization over the weekend, Strickland shared a swim and dinner with Wilson on May 11, 2022, before dropping her off at the apartment where she was staying in Austin, Texas, prior to the Gravel Locos race. Hours later, Wilson was found unresponsive by her hosts and was later pronounced dead from gunshot wounds. On May 19, police issued an arrest warrant for Strickland's live-in partner, Armstrong, for first-degree felony murder. Strickland is not a suspect in this case.

On May 20, the U.S. Marshals Service Lone Star Fugitive Task Force declared Armstrong a fugitive and requested assistance in locating her. That same day, Strickland released a statement claiming that her relationship with Wilson was "platonic and professional" and wrote, "There is no way to adequately express the regret and torture I feel about my proximity to this horrific crime."

The family of Moriah 'Mo' Wilson organized a GoFundMe to honor her memory and raise funds. The Feed, an online sports nutrition store, offers Ride Like Mo bottles, with 100% of the $24 fee going to a scholarship fund chosen by her family in Wilson's memory.
