Former professional cyclist shot dead in Colombia

Jaime Alberto Restrepo, a former Colombian professional cyclist, was shot dead in the Colombian state of Antioquia on Monday.

The Colombian news agency El Tiempo reported that Antioquia police said two armed suspects approached Restrepo around 6:30 p.m. as he was traveling on a motorcycle. One of them shot Restrepo repeatedly, killing him within "a few minutes."

The motive for the crime is currently unknown. One of the suspects, a 35-year-old man, was captured at the scene and "a .38 caliber revolver was seized from the alleged perpetrator."

Former track cyclist Jaime Restrepo, 25, was the 2014 Pan American Junior Time Trial Champion and was also 9th in the Junior Individual Time Trial at the Road World Championships in Ponferrada, Spain that same year. The race against the clock that year was won by German Leonard Kemna, now racing for Bora-Hansgrohe, with Filippo Ganna and Michael Stoller also finishing in the top 10.

After some time away from cycling, Restrepo moved to Europe in 2019 to race on the road with Team Novak in Romania. That year, he finished in the top 10 in the 2.1 class Tour de Hongri, Tour de Serbia, and Cycling Tour Seclerland, as well as in fifth place overall.

After not competing in any UCI classified road races during the 2020 season, which was interrupted by the pandemic, Restrepo had a short season with Team Novac in 2021, competing in less than three months in European UCI classified road races. During that time, he completed the 2.2-rank Tour of Bulgaria and returned to the Cycling Tour of Zeklerland.

At the time of his death, he had no team contract, but reportedly continued training in his hometown of Ciudad Bolivar, hoping to continue his career as a professional cyclist.
