Shimano Cuts Hammerhead Integration After SRAM Acquisition

Shimano has requested that key Di2 integration features be removed from Hammerhead cycling computers, so users will no longer enjoy features such as being able to control the head unit display using Shimano's Di2 shifters.

The Hammerhead Kalu 2 is claimed by the recently acquired manufacturer of SRAM to be the most powerful cycling computer in the world. It is listed in the best cycling computer guide and has a five-star rating in Cycling News.

We praised its functionality, but it appears that a firmware upgrade on June 2 will remove some features. At Shimano's request, users will no longer have access to some of the Di2 integration features.

Hammerhead Karoo users will no longer be able to see battery level, shifter mode, front and rear derailleur displays, or cycle through data screens using buttons hidden in the hood if they update on the day the firmware is released. will no longer be possible.

If firmware updates can be avoided, users may avoid loss of functionality, but risk bugs and loss of support for new features and maps.

At this stage, it is unclear to users why the feature is being removed; Cyclingnews has reached out to Shimano for comment.

Hammerhead was acquired by SRAM in January of this year, and Clint Weber, SRAM's vice president of growth, quickly assured users of SRAM's Groupset and Hammerhead computers that there is no exclusivity between the two technologies.

"We're not going to change anything about the way [Hammerhead] innovates," Weber said. We are excited about this acquisition and excited that their team will continue to design, manufacture, and market technology and quality leading head units that work with all brands of drivetrains."

It is clear that this is going to be a developmental story and we will certainly follow it.
