Austin's cycling community will host a memorial event for Moriah Wilson on May 29, 2022 at 5:30 pm local time. The group ride will start from Republic Square to the Deep Eddy Municipal Pool to "acknowledge the tragedy of loss and condemn the violence that led to this loss."
Wilson was killed in a May 11 shooting in Austin, Texas. She was 25 years old.
According to Tony Plohetski, investigative reporter for Austin's ABC affiliate KUVE, the cycling community will hold a memorial service on Sunday from 5:30 to 6 p.m., followed by a memorial ride to the Deep Eddy municipal pool where Wilson was swimming the night she died. The event will take place.
"The Austin cycling community has organized a memorial ride for cyclist Moriah Wilson, who was killed last week while visiting. It will be Sunday at 5:30 in Republic Square and will go to Deep Eddy Pool, the last place she visited before she was killed," Prohecki posted on Twitter on Monday.
Organizers of the memorial ride are inviting the cycling community to participate in the event to honor Wilson's life.
"Please join the Austin cycling community for a memorial to honor the life of Moriah Wilson. This memorial will be a rally to acknowledge the tragedy of losing Ms. Wilson and to denounce the violence that caused it. We will gather at Republic Square for a memorial service, followed by a short ride to Deep Eddy, Moriah's last stop.
Wilson's family has also organized a GoFundMe to honor her memory and raise funds. Funds raised will be donated to local youth organizations that focus on finding confidence, strength, and joy through activities such as cycling and skiing, which were Wilson's passions.
In a statement on the GoFundMe (opens in new tab) page, her family wrote a message, explaining that the organization intends to help youth pursue their dreams.
The page was launched on May 19 and had raised over $104,000 as of May 28. The goal has been raised to $250,000.
Wilson made a lasting impact on the cycling world as one of gravel racing's fastest rising stars and with her kind and friendly personality. Upon hearing of her tragic passing, the cycling community paid tribute to Wilson's life and offered condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones.
