Ben Tallet impresses on his Grand Tour debut with Ineos Grenadiers

Despite Richard Kalapas' second place finish behind Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) on the final day of the Giro d'Italia, the riders of Ineos Grenadiers refused to leave quietly, and 20-year-old Ben Tullett, who was Verona's time Trial to a stunning 5th place finish.

Kalapas is the current Grand Tour leader of Ineos Grenadiers, but Tullett is one of the next generation of riders on the team and represents the future.

He is younger than Ethan Hayter, Tom Pidcock, Luke Plapp, Magnus Sheffield, Ben Turner, Kim Haiduk, and Carlos Rodriguez, but is the first rider to complete the Giro d'Italia. 2020 and 2021. He raced for Alpecin Phoenix, but Ineos Grenadiers team manager Rod Ellingworth has confirmed that he will be part of the British team for the next stage of his career.

While Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) successfully transitioned from cyclocross to road racing, Ellingworth said that the two-time junior cyclocross world champion is special talent, and decided that he could qualify for the Giro d'Italia and immediately test the limits of the Grand Tour.

Before starting the Giro d'Italia in Budapest on May 6, Tourette's longest race was the seven-day 2021 Tour de Pollogne, where he finished ninth overall.

"This last week in the mountains was really tough, but I enjoyed it," he said with youthful enthusiasm.

"Running a Grand Tour is like doing a year's worth of races in one race. It's crazy and totally different from other races. Of course, 21 days of racing can be taxing, but I enjoy it."

Turrette helped Carapaz in the mountains in the final week and rode strong all the way to the finish in Verona.

"I went out with the intention of giving it my all and emptying the tank. It was a hard time trial course with climbs and technical descents, but I enjoyed it."

Turret enjoyed a front row seat to the master class of Grand Tour racing when he raced with Calapaz.

"It was great to watch him. He's an inspiration and it's incredible to be here," Tullett enthused, and like Calapaz, the initial disappointment of defeat turned to pride and satisfaction at his second place overall in Verona.

"We can't be disappointed with our effort. It was a great team effort. Now we are tired and need rest, but we hope to start the Grand Tour again soon."
