The Giro d'Italia concluded on Sunday with a time trial in Verona to determine the final overall standings.
Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) took the overall win ahead of Richard Karapas (Ineos Grenadiers) in the 17.4km time trial.
Mikkel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) took the final spot on the podium.
Hindley, who had beaten his rivals in Marmolada the previous afternoon, started the final time trial with a 1:25 lead over Kalapas.
As a result, he took the lead in the final standings, 1:18 ahead of the Ecuadorian.
Landa had hoped to overheat Calapaz, but had to settle for third place, 3:24 behind.
The gap was so great that only one of the top 10 overall had to be replaced. Hugh Carthy (EF Education-Easy Post) did well to finish 11th, pulling Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) out of 9th place.
Elsewhere, Vincenzo Nibali (Astana-Cazacastan) finished fourth overall in the last Giro, and Pello Bilbao placed two in the top five in Bahrain-Victorias. [Emmanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Domenico Pozzovivo (Intermarché Wanty-Gobert Materio) rounded out the top 10 ahead of Carty and Lopez.
