Morema to remain with Trek-Segafredo through 2026

After the team's success at the Giro d'Italia, Trek-Segafredo announced that it has agreed to sign Dutch rider Bauke Mollema to a contract through 2026.

It is a big deal for the 35-year-old, who has been with Trek-Segafredo for eight seasons.

"I have been really happy here since the beginning and I still can't imagine being anywhere else," Morema said in a press release. 'I'm really looking forward to being with this team for the next few years.'

Morema began his career with the Rabobank team, where he spent seven seasons before moving to Trek-Segafredo in 2015. In the last few years, he has moved into a freer role.

"As everyone knows, my role has changed a bit in the last few years. When I came to this team I was mainly a GC rider, especially targeting the Tour. After doing that for many years, I started to focus more on one-day races and more recently I started targeting Grand Tour stages. I like that role, and in my current career, it probably suits me better than aiming for GC," Mollema said. [There are younger riders in the Grand Tours now who have a better shot at GC than I do, and I have a mentoring role for them. I have a lot of experience that I hope I can share with them and give them advice to help them in the future."

In the Giro d'Italia, he supported Juan Pedro Lopez during the 10 days he won the maglia rosa, attacking on several stages and finishing second behind Cane Bowman (Jumbo Visma) on stage 7, Potenza.

During his time with Trek-Segafredo, Moreman won two stages in the Tour de France (2017 and 2021), as well as the Clasica San Sebastian (2016) and Il Lombardia (2019).

"I also have fond memories of fighting for GC in the 2015 Tour de France and finishing seventh," Morema added.

"As well as the 2016 Tour, where I was so close to the podium until I crashed in the closing stages, and the 2019 Giro d'Italia. What I like most is the great partnership I have with the team. There's freedom here and that's important for me as a rider."

While it remains to be seen if this will be the last contract of his career, Mollema said he hopes to finish his time as a professional rider with Trek-Segafredo.

"When this contract is over, I will have been here for another 12 years. I am happy that the team and sponsors have given me such a long contract. I don't think that happens very often with riders my age," Morema explained.

"At this point, this will most likely be my last contract, but who knows what I will be thinking in four years. I always say this, but I still think I'm young. I've been a pro for 15 years now and I really like what I do. I like training hard. I like racing. I'm competitive and I like to get the best out of my body. I'm still always trying to improve and setting new goals for myself."

"I'm a very competitive person, and I'm always trying to get better.
