Women's Tour organizer Sweet Spot has decided to broadcast live coverage of the Women's World Tour race, which will take place in the UK from June 6-11, 2022. This will be the first time fans will be able to watch live streaming of the race after "commercial realities" derailed earlier broadcast plans last year.
"Live television coverage of the Women's Tour has been our primary goal since the inaugural event in 2014. Not only will it further enhance the global reputation of our race, but we hope it will be transformational for women's sport in the UK," said Hugh Roberts, Women's Tour Executive Committee Chair.
"We also hope that as we continue to look for headline sponsors beyond 2023, more major brands will join us at our events to help showcase their support for women's sport.
Daily live coverage will be available on Eurosport Player and GCN +, while the race highlight show will be broadcast nightly on ITV4 in the UK. Organizers will announce the live broadcast schedule soon, but confirmed to Cycling News that some stages will be broadcast from start to finish, while others will run for about 90 minutes to two hours.
The Women's Tour, which began in 2014 and was part of the Women's World Tour starting in 2016, was canceled in 2020 and postponed until late 2021.
The UCI requires at least 45 minutes of live coverage in order to be on the top-level Women's World Tour calendar after 2020.
Live coverage was initially planned for last year's event after organizers announced they would provide coverage as part of a five-year agreement between Eurosport and the Global Cycling Network (GCN). However, a week before the tournament, organizers announced that this was not possible due to "commercial realities."
In April, Sweet Spot confirmed that it was seeking to raise a minimum of £75,000 from potential sponsors to pay for a live broadcast of the first tournament to be held in 2022.
The broadcast was made possible by self-catering accommodation provider cottages.com (part of Awaze), event officials, and Eurosport GCN, read a statement from SweetSpot.
"We are delighted to partner with two great events this summer (the Women's Tour and the Tour of Britain). We are especially pleased that our support will help bring international women's sport into the limelight," said Marianna Helmer-Gregersen, European Brand Director for Awaze, the parent company of cottages.com.
"This is a great opportunity to not only showcase the scale, scale and quality of our UK property portfolio to a global audience, but at the same time highlight our commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion."
