Greg LeMond has revealed that he is undergoing treatment for treatable, non-life-threatening chronic myeloid leukemia.

The 60-year-old American revealed the news by posting a personal message on the website of his bicycle brand.

"No one wants to hear the word cancer, but it is a huge relief to know why I was not feeling well," Lemond wrote, revealing that he had been suffering from fatigue for several weeks and had been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia after a physical exam and blood tests. [Fortunately, the disease is a type of leukemia that is treatable and not life-threatening or debilitating.

He is being treated by doctors at the University of Tennessee and is being consulted by a team from the Mayo Clinic.

"The doctors and I have decided on a treatment regimen that we will start this week. It should get better in a few weeks, and I've been told that with a few changes in my daily schedule in the near future, I should be in remission in a few months." [The long-term prognosis is very good. I am fortunate to have a wonderful team of doctors and the full support of my family, friends, and colleagues at Lumondo Bicycle."

Lemond won the Tour de France in 1986, 1989, and 1990; he also won the World Championships in 1983 and 1989, and in 1987 he recovered from a gunshot-like injury to lead a successful second half of his career.

LeMond retired from competition in December 1994 and, as an anti-doping campaigner, often questioned Lance Armstrong's performance.

In recent years, Lemond has relaunched his bicycle company, developing electric bikes and using new carbon fiber technology in a new series of road bikes.

Lemond insisted that the development of Lemond Bicycles would not be interrupted. He admitted that he would not be able to make his annual trip to the Tour de France, but promised to return in 2023.

"Lemont Bicycles has a great team and they are keeping me updated on my condition as I prepare this statement.

"I will continue to be involved and supportive of their plans for the summer ahead. I had hoped to stay in France in July for the Tour, but I am working on alternative plans so that I can attend the Tour from my office and farm in Tennessee and socialize with my friends and teammates. I look forward to returning to the Tour next summer."

"We are on an exciting path to great success with Lemond Bicycles. I will keep you all updated on my health and treatment over the next few months, but for now, I couldn't ask for anything better. I am excited about our plans for the future and look forward to updating you all along the way."
