Sunday's Vuelta a Colombia saw a chaotic and surprising scene as the stage winner crossed the finish line in heavy rain in Monteria and crashed into his wife.
Luis Carlos Chia, who won the opening stage and wore the overall leader's yellow jersey, won stage 3 again in the pouring rain.
But his joy was short-lived, as television cameras captured images of him lying on the ground after a collision with someone across the finish line. That person was his wife, rider and cameraman Claudia Roncancio.
Chia made it to the podium, limping on his right leg. Roncancio, meanwhile, was taken to the hospital and needed four stitches, according to the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo.
After the podium ceremony, Chia told Caracol broadcaster that the brakes did not work well in the extremely wet conditions, which were so extreme that he was racing through the water.
"That area is for photographers. It could have been her or anyone else. I was running at high speed. I had a similar situation the other day, but it wasn't raining that day and the brakes worked perfectly," he said.
"Today I tried to brake and the brakes jammed and I just ran right into her."
Roncancio said he was relatively unscathed, and Chia was able to joke about the situation. He said his two stage wins were "a dream come true" and he would start stage 4 in the leader's jersey.
The moment of impact was not fully captured by the TV cameras, but you can see how the strange events unfolded in the video below.
