Wout Van Aert regained the yellow jersey on stage 3 of the Criterium du Dauphiné, but was unable to smile on the podium as David Gaudou (Groupama-FDJ) snatched the stage win.
Van Aert completed a brilliant Jumbo-Visma team effort on the climb to Chastlet-Sancy, looking for his second stage win in three days. He took the line in the middle of the road in a sprint for the win, and it looked as if he would win. But as the finish line approached, Gaudoux popped out of his slipstream and timed it perfectly to throw his bike over the line and snatch the win.
Van Aert's celebration instantly turned to dismay when he realized his mistake, and Gordou celebrated his robbery and deserved victory.
Van Art sat on the ground across the finish line, trying to overcome the pain of defeat and the embarrassment of celebrating in front of the finish line.
"It was a rookie mistake, a rookie mistake," Van Aert admitted, according to Sporza.
"With a rising finish like this, you lose speed when you celebrate. It was a split second and David Gaudou came from the other side ....... It's just painful."
"It's a huge disappointment that I didn't get the job done today. It was in my own hands. After the podium ceremony, he told Cycling Pro Net and other broadcasters, "If I had thrown a wheel instead of rejoicing, I think I would have won."
"I've seen it before with other riders. But now I'm the loser. I don't think this has ever happened before. At least not in a big race like this. When I see him with the other racers, I always wonder how that is possible. Now I understand how they feel. Hopefully it won't happen a second time."
Juan Art took back the race leader's yellow jersey, but had little to celebrate.
"If I had won, I would have had that jersey too," he said, hoping to quickly make up for his mistake in Wednesday's 31.9 km flat time trial.
"I had a tough day and I want to recover well. I put a lot of effort into the time trial.
"The final was super hard and the breakaway group was really strong in the second half of the stage, so I had to chase hard in the group.
"I hope to make up for it in the next few days.
