The Benelux Tour will not take place in 2022 due to an overcrowded August cycling calendar. In a statement, organizer Gorasso said it is working with the UCI to hold the event on a more comfortable schedule in 2023.
This year's Benelux Tour (formerly known as the Eneco Tour and Binck Bank Tour) was scheduled to take place in the Netherlands and Belgium from August 29 to September 4. The race was to clash with the Vuelta a EspaƱa, which was to begin on August 19 in Utrecht.
"For the organizers, postponing the event is the only solution to avoid the problems associated with an overcrowded cycling calendar, especially at the logistics and media level.
"The pressure of the international cycling calendar causes several conflicts, so despite futile attempts, postponement is the only possible solution.
Golasso added that the Dutch police cannot guarantee supervision of the stages in the Netherlands. He said, "For the safety-conscious Benelux Tour, racing without the necessary police assistance is dangerous and not an option.
In addition, clashing with the Vuelta for the second year in a row has created problems with the broadcast schedule and media visibility. Golasso said this would lead to logistical problems for the participating teams.
"Arrival times and TV broadcast schedules were also a challenge," Golasso said. The time of day when other races were being broadcast at the same time would have forced us to plan arrival times that were not interesting for our supporters and guests in the area, as well as for our television audience. It would also make team departure times and travel impossible."[13
Golasso confirmed that he is working with the UCI and the Belgian and Dutch cycling federations to create another slot in the calendar starting in 2023.
The race was first held in 2005 under the Eneco Tour banner as a replacement for the old Tour of the Netherlands and was part of the opening round of the ProTour (now WorldTour) that season.
The event had traditionally been held in early August, but in 2016 it was changed to September due to the Rio Olympics and the World Championships in Doha in October of that year. Four years later, the calendar was changed due to a coronavirus pandemic and the event was held in late September.
Last year, the Benelux Tour was held in late August and clashed directly with the Vuelta. Sonny Colbrelli took the overall win, and he later won both the European Championships and Paris-Roubaix that fall.
"The postponement of the Benelux Tour to 2023 is a disappointment for the cycling fans of Les Prats Pays and for our team, which has already been preparing for months," said Christophe Impens of Golasso. 'But this is a necessary decision and the only solution to avoid problems.'
